watching Mars together

the most romantic evening
of my life
occurred
last month
with my wife
and I watching
Mars
above
the Khagrachari hilltops
from the dusk
of the rear
verandah
of our hotel room

such expansion
of ourselves
happen
rarely, rarely
as it did
on two evenings
in twenty years

Venus is brighter than Mars at this time (last month in Khagrachori). Venus magnitude is -4.1, mercury is -0.4, and Mars is 1.4. Saturn is brighter than Mars at 1.2. The alignment that you observed is Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn going from West to East sky. Venus is by far the brightest in the sky. You probably observed Venus. Mars is much less bright and close to Venus. Venus is a sparkling white body, Mars is yellowish orange. What did you really see?

Venus had long disappeared behind the hills at 8:00 pm when this poem was conceived (it would set at 9:38 pm at azimuth angle 297). Venus is not red, surely.

By 8:30, even Mars (azimuth angle 286) had dropped behind the hills (though it would set at 12:29).

Saturn at 8:00 pm would not be visible from the rear verandah: it was obstructed by the cornice. I would have had to go to the roof to see Saturn, but I preferred the proximity of my verandah.

Last month the monsoon clouds, especially the nimbostratus, were strong and hid the sky most of the time.

I hope the topography, the weather and the architecture are clear: and, please keep in mind, this is a poem.

Ah, as they say 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus!' :) I am glad you had a good time.
