A German diplomatic team was here in Bangladesh the other day. Their spokeswoman, Fraulein Nina Zuring, said: "We are friends of Bangladesh. Actually, we are masters – we give aid to Bangladesh, and we have ruled the country for the last thirty years. Of course, not we alone, but the other European nations and especially America."
She was praised for her frankness, and received a standing ovation. This was at the German Cultural Centre on the 31st of March.
When asked why the Germans (along with the other masters) had decided to impose democracy on Bangladesh after 1989, she said: "Dummkopf! Don't you know the Berlin Wall had come down and I could visit my communist cousins again? Dummkopf!"

The theme of master and slave runs like a leitmotif through western civilization. This is the story of a Bengali-English interpreter, who has a clear vision of the relationship possible between white and non-white people – a relationship based on nothing more, or less, than work.
